Eric Tong | Principal Designer of Eravolution
Graduated from The Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London, Eric Tong is an architect who worked for renowned architects Zaha Hadid and Future Systems before founding his own studio Eravolution. Alongside his roles as adjunct lecturer of Architecture at the Hong Kong University SPACE and lecturer of Innovative Furniture Design at the Hong Kong Design Institute, Tong is also a multiple award-winner of international honours such as the “Best Design Educator” from the Hong Kong Designer Association in 2016, thePerspective “A&D Trophy” Awards in “Best Furniture”, “Best Green Product”, and the “40 Under 40” Award as one of future’s most influential designers.
If one were to pick only a word or two to describe Eric Tong and his works, there would be no better diction than the Chinese “white space” in watercolour paintings. To Tong, design is a blank canvas open for problem-solving and a better life experience to the users. Purism is therefore at the core of his design practice, where all works are aesthetically reduced to the most basic substance with nothing extra and fancy. The strong belief in minimalism also sees him literally reserving an empty spot in his office, constantly hoping to develop a new furniture typology to fill it in.
